Message from Our Representative Director

The mission of underwriters at life insurers are to ensure all customers bear insurance premiums fairly for the risk they bring to the insurance pool. Our duty is one of the core functions of the life insurance business.
By evaluating applications according to applicant’s age, gender, health conditions, medical treatments taken and labor status, we make decisions whether to accept such applications with or without conditions. Thus we contribute to the welfare & function of society by providing financial protection, while we protect and control the mortality & morbidity experience of insurers we are employed by.
We have to understand risk selection process and claims tendency of each product precisely. We also need to properly incorporate not only expansion of life expectancy due to advancement of medical treatments but also new screening technologies into our underwriting process. Those are important duties of underwriters too. We must continuously modify our risk selection process taking into account changes in the society and industries.
In product development, we need to build all underwriting procedures including health questionnaire and screening exams in accordance with expected mortality/morbidity and risks for each product/market. As specialists, we need to develop new products together with peers at product development, sales planning, information technology and claims departments often within a limited timeframe.
We sometimes share more difficult and/or complex risks with reinsurers. Utilizing reinsurance, we can learn issues of new underwriting procedures and also improve our existing process by learning underwriting practice/procedures outside Japan.
Organizational function of an underwriting department involves budgeting, HR planning, developing requirements of IT systems too. Education and training of junior underwriters and candidates of future managements are also important tasks of underwriters and managers.
With the progress of IT and communications infrastructure, underwriters in many International markets have the option to work at home when a long-term leave is required or when someone need to limit his/her working hours. We will soon have to design flexible employment strategies in order to keep skilled underwriters in the industry.

We, as an association of underwriters, are providing underwriters with various educational sessions so that underwriters can deepen their technical skills and knowledge. We also conduct professional examinations every year. Our aim is to create an environment of continued professional development where underwriters can proficiently manage/handle challenges and changes we are facing.
